The Victorinox Special Mechanic Swiss Army Knife is a retired
and moderately rare two-layer knife with pliers and a few other tools.
It's basically a Compact knife
with pliers instead of scissors. This is definitely the smallest pocket
knife that contains a set of pliers!
The Special Mechanic pocket knife was Victorinox model
#53823. We haven't found any mention of it in older Victorinox catalogs--
but it was
apparently sold through Radio Shack, and also distributed
as a promotional, with various company names on the back.
The body is cut away one one side to fit the pliers, which means
you can see the inside of the scales (similar to Wenger knives,
but unlike all other Victorinox models). That feature definitely
makes this knife look like a custom or experimental model!
The Special Mechanic is definitely a collector's item that sells
at a premium price. If you just want a small, practical knife
with pliers, consider a regular Mechanic instead.
You'll gain a couple of tools at a lower price! NOTE-- For a while, we called this the Mechanic Junior,
but alert viewer Tim Collling sent us the proper name. |
